Linked by Rail is a consortium of Dutch and Polish partners which is supported by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency as well as the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Republic of Poland. Members of the consortium are well known within the area of intermodal transport and are mostly active in both countries. Among them: Boekesteijn Transport Service, CLIP Intermodal Container, Terminal, ERS Railways B.V., Raillogix B.V., Koninklijk Nederlands Vervoer, Panteia, Nijman/Zeetank International Tanktransporten BV, Nijhof-Wassink, Port of Rotterdam, Seacon Logistics B.V., Eucon Shipping & Transport Ltd., van den Bosch Transporten B.V.
Currently six direct shuttle trains per week are connecting both regions. Since the start of the regular connection in May 2012, approximately 120.000 TEU equivalent to 53.000 trailers have been carried by rail enabling the partners of the consortium as well as other customers of this train connection to actively shift cargo from road to rail thus reducing the numbers of trucks by an equivalent number. Additionally, CO2 emissions were reduced by approximately 80% compared to road transport resulting in more then 35.000 tons of CO2 which have been saved.
Based on the successful first Linked by Rail initiative the consortium partners signed up to a second agreement back in December 2015. The second agreement is focussing on establishing a new intermodal connection between Rotterdam and Southern Poland (Rotterdam – Silesia).
The project is the answer to the growing interest in intermodal transport among Dutch and Polish companies. More and more organizations value the advantages of intermodal transport connected with seamless rail based transport solutions which help increase safety, environmental protection as well as optimizing total cost of ownership when transporting goods between the Netherlands and Poland vv. The Linked by Rail program is accompanied by trade fair promotions, training courses and as well as trade missions, which aim at increasing awareness of this way of transport. An additional and important aspect is that this program contributes to strengthening the economic cooperation between both countries.
The target audience the Linked by Rail consortium partners would like to meet and talk to are shippers/manufacturers from Poland as well as the Netherlands in order to increase the consortium footprint on this important trade corridor.

Poland is seen as one of the largest growers in the European agrifood market and therewith constitutes a strong competitor, but also an excellent partner for the Dutch business community. For that reason, a Dutch-Polish consortium is in the process of developing an agrifood cluster called „AgroFreshPark Poland” (AFPL). This cluster consists of three related but functionally different elements: (1) FreshPark, a business park for transport/logistics (cross-docking), trade, packaging and processing of fresh produce, (2) AgroPark, an area reserved for large-scale greenhouse production with all the supporting infrastructure, and (3) the AgroFreshPark Services Centre, providing services such as facility management, utilities, training and education, estate management, demonstration and promotion of technology. AFPL will be situated in the heart of Poland in the Łòdzkie Region, and will be structured similar to Dutch greenports (i.e. Fresh Park Venlo, Agriport A7 and Demokwekerij Westland), but adapted to the Polish market and in close cooperation with local partners.
In this cluster Polish and Dutch companies producing, processing and distributing fresh food will be accommodated not only for the international markets but also for the so-called “local for local” market. The consortium wants to enter into partnerships with Polish companies, Dutch companies already active in Poland and offer and realize competitive and sustainable conditions in the areas of the energy, water and waste management and facilitate the education and training of professionals. It will develop and create financial mechanisms to allow small and medium sized companies (SME’s) to be active as partners in this agrifood cluster.
The initiative is supported by the Dutch government under the Partners for International Business (PIB) program; a public-private partnership covenant has been signed last year. Within this program two liaisons managers have been appointed to support Dutch and Polish companies and institutions.

The Vistula River Park is a consortium of Dutch partners (Arcadis, Deltares, Eurolandscape Landscape Architects and RDH Rothuizen Architects and Urbanists) and Polish partners (regional authorities, municipalities and NGO’s), who joined the forces to revitalize the infrastructure of the Vistula river, its riverbanks and adjacent areas. The consortium works within the framework of the Partners for International Business (BIP) Program Water Poland and is supported by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) as well the Netherlands Embassy in Warsaw. The Mazovia Region is the main client.
There are two areas of development and investment identified: the North Vistula riverbank and the South Vistula riverbank. The rural area at the North side of the Vistula river has a high agricultural potential due to its climatological, natural and environmental conditions. However, in order to benefit from this potential, two main interventions in the area are necessary: revitalization and re-development of the irrigation, water storage and retention systems and land consolidation. The South side of the Vistula river has, due to its natural and environmental conditions, including the Kampinos national Park and Natura 2000 area, an excellent position to support the future smart and green development of the Warsaw agglomerate.
Nowadays, however, the river is hardly navigable, cities and villages do not benefit from the potential of the inland waters, the potential for agriculture, recreation and tourism remains unused. To revitalize the infrastructure of the Vistula river (and the same goes for the Odra), the Polish government under the supervision of the Ministry of Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation is launching an ambitious plan of investments in Poland’s main rivers. The plan envisages to enhance the navigability of the rivers, build dams to protect against floods, erect hydroelectric power stations, and stimulate other functions the inland waters may offer.
Polish –Dutch cooperation
The practices from the Netherlands in the field of water management can offer a lot to fulfill Polish ambitions, provided they are carefully selected. With the support of the Polish liaison partner RDH Urban Planners, 25 selected Polish partners visited a number of Dutch best practices in the field of the integrated area development. Beside the knowledge sharing, the visit to the Netherlands was the first step towards building a network between Dutch and Polish partners.
The Vistula River Park consortium proposes a number of specific projects to boost the potential of the Vistula riverbanks. Boulevards with housing, yacht marinas, wellness and recreational parks are just a few examples. Organic farming will label the village of Leoncin as a ‘blue green eco village’. At the border of the National Park Kampinos, 20 minutes from the center of Warsaw, a location for 400 recreational homes is waiting for an investor. The ferry system will facilitate the connection between the riverbanks and will make them better accessible for the development of leisure, tourism and recreation. Multifunctional use of storm water will help making landscape more attractive for agriculture and housing. The cities, such as Plock and Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, will become better connected with the river.
Following the experience of the Dutch company ‘Leisurelands’, a new model of cooperation is proposed. Polish local governments, who are the partners of the ‘Vistula River Park’, will offer transparent investment conditions to a wide spectrum of (Dutch) companies. With help of a public development company, Public Private Partnerships will be simplified. Involvement of the Mazovia Region offers a direct access to all information about possible (EU) subsidies.

The workshop is addressed to managers and employees of private and public organizations, who aspire to develop innovative solutions for the citizens and in public environment.
The municipality of Enschede has the ambition to become an innovative Smart city.
We see possible opportunities to:
respond faster to developments in the city and exert influence wherever necessary, based on open, small and big data;
improve services to citizens and corporations and make soon new services available;
adopt a different role as a local government: a facilitator, rather than an initiator;
create new job opportunities in Enschede and Twente.
For that reason Enschede works with several private technology partners such such as Nokia and Topicus. Enschede has a worldwide network with other Smart cities and partners, i.e. Palo Alto (USA), Dalian (PRC) and Heidelberg (Germany).
Enschede is developing a unique infrastructure for testing Smart solutions: a Smart Technology Base at our Twente Airport for secured development and testing, a Smart Campus at the Technological University of Twente for nearby high-tech knowledge and first field tests in a specific environment and the Smart city centre of Enschede, to test in a civil field lab. We are testing ICT solutions, environment concepts, Safety & Security applications, drones, etc.
All these aspect will be discussed during the workshop.

In this 1 hour seminar we will stipulate on advancing your cross-cultural competencies to improve effectiveness and efficiency in the international cooperation between Poland and the Netherlands. A first glance at becoming cultural aware
“International business starts with intercultural understanding”
Many of the difficulties experienced by companies/organisation doing international business arise due to a lack of knowledge of the cultures encountered.
Globalisation, ICT and the Internet play a large role in this, for the world seems a lot smaller and communication lines are shorter. Parties involved in international business tend to ignore and deny the existence of differences, in the name of a „global” culture, which (it is believed) transcends national cultures. Particularly in managerial circles.
With this in mind, it has become vital in these times more than ever to identify and to be aware of the different cultural systems. This awareness will enable to adapt one’s behaviour, communication, negotiation- and management styles accordingly, and will allow people to improve professionally as well in international business and cooperation’s and avoids making a ‘faux pas’ .
Program outline
Makes you aware of which cultural business aspects are relevant for successful international cooperation.
Content:
Theoretical aspects of intercultural communication: comparison of Polish and Dutch company cultural profiles and countries
Business case examples of intercultural do’s and don’ts between Poland and The Netherlands
Sharing and exchanging international experiences and putting them to use
By the end of this mini-seminar you will have acquired general insights and techniques to:
Understand the business culture of the Polish and Dutch people with whom you interact professionally
Recognize possible situations in which misunderstandings may arise and identify ways of improving communication
Reduce stress and misunderstandings in a cross-cultural environment
Identify common cultural preferences within professional/business cultures
